Mercy Corps has specialized, for more than 25 years, in helping people in impoverished, war-torn and emerging countries to climb their own learning curves successfully. As the charity’s website summarizes it, "Mercy Corps exists to alleviate suffering, poverty and oppression by helping people build secure, productive and just communities". The organization accomplishes this ambitious goal through a combination of emergency relief services, sustainable economic development programs and civil society initiatives.

Mercy Corp's projects respond directly to community-identified needs with creative programmes designed according to local culture and economic, social and political realities. These projects include education projects in Eritrea, creating clean water supplies in Tajikistan, rebuilding hospitals in Afghanistan and empowering local organisations in Russia.
