Dating back over three hundred years handkerchiefs, scarves and Macclesfield Stripe are just the best-known products of the East Cheshire silk industry. Three award winning museum sites in Macclesfield provide places to meet and experience the silk heritage and to see handlooms working on an original factory site. The Silk Textile Heritage Centre is housed within the former Sunday School. There is an award winning audio visual programme and silk costume and textiles illustrate the importance of silk to fashion and its use for special occasions. Just a short walk away and adjacent to Paradise Mill, the new Silk Industry Museum explores the properties of silk, design education and Macclesfield's diverse textile industries.
