Day 5 - Lazing in the Croatian Sun Print E-mail
Sunday, 19 March 2006

I couldn't bring myself to get up this morning especially after having eaten so well last night (and drunk far too much Croatian red wine - which while not being like a Lafite is actually not too bad).

Still I did get up and popped round the corner to the shop to stock up on traditional Sunday morning supplies of eggs, bacon, bread and coffee and made myself a fry up in the appartment. I actually feel that I am living here rather than just visiting which is kind of cool. This tactic also had the added advantage of making it a lot cheaper. I'm already over budget so a little home cooking wont harm.

I spent most of this afternoon and what was left of the morning exploring Solin (Salona) about 6km away which is where the Romans built their capital of Dalmatia. Most of it is pretty much as ruined as possible but there were interesting remains of the amphitheatre, the baths and the forum to wander around it. Bizarrely, rather than being a city of culture, Solin has become an industrial nightmare and my trip was spoiled somewhat by the fact that the ruins are surrounded by two enormous highways and smoking chimneys in the background. Still it was an interesting morning out of town and I didnt get back to Split until 4, when I bumped into Marija walking the streets. The sun was shining so I offered to buy her a drink to say thankyou for her amazing appartment. Since I was a paying guest I suppose it wasnt neccessary but I was in a good mood and she seemed fairly interesting.

And so I sit in the internet cafe eagerly awaiting the Fulham vs Chelsea score expecting a thrashing... we'll see. I did look into seeing if Hadjuk Split FC were playing and even made a trip up to the stadium yesterday but alas they were playing away.

Off to Bosnia tomorrow morning at another ungodly hour...
